Matt's Apartment
2011 Shanghai. Apartment Design – A Fusion of Art and Elegance
Located in a historic villa on Yongjia Road in Shanghai, this project merges the elegance of Paris, the dynamism of New York, and the rich Art Deco heritage of old Shanghai. The home belongs to Matt, a former banker turned art investor, who transitioned into the art world after 15 years in the United States. The design balances simplicity and sophistication, with a black-and-white palette enriched by carefully selected materials like marble, wood, and metal. Thoughtfully placed Art Deco light fixtures and vintage European elements create a harmonious dialogue with the lush greenery visible through the windows.
Art plays a central role in the space, from sculptures to paintings by notable artists, displayed along corridors and integrated into functional areas. The living room is a sanctuary of light and air, reflecting Matt's love for open spaces and connection to nature.
Practical yet elegant, the layout follows Matt’s daily routines. A streamlined open-plan kitchen flows into a dining area with a long table, inviting lively gatherings. The workspace, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, serves as the home's hub, emphasizing functionality and creativity.
The project demonstrates a meticulous attention to detail, with custom-made cabinetry, decorative fireplaces, and bespoke furnishings. Each element reflects Matt's commitment to surrounding himself with objects and art that inspire and bring joy, making this home a true reflection of his identity and aspirations.
