Coimbatore Mills

2024 Coimbatore, India. Core Store

Tata Starbucks opened its first store in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, marking the milestone of its 400th store in India.

Located in the historic Lakshmi Mills compound in Pudur, the store honors one of India's oldest yarn and fabric manufacturing sites. The design combines traditional and modern elements, creating a space that celebrates local heritage. At its heart is a suspended sculpture crafted from woven wood, linen textiles, and braided ropes. Like the Reserve stores in Mumbai and Hong Kong, this feature embodies my design philosophy: making full use of high-ceilinged spaces to integrate art and design cohesively, enhancing the sense of volume and expression. The terrazzo flooring, concrete walls, and a ceiling grid coated in red oxide harmonize to create a warm and inviting atmosphere where light and shadow play delicately.

Since entering the Indian market in 2012, Tata Starbucks has grown to over 60 cities, pioneering coffee culture in a country traditionally known for tea. By tailoring offerings to local tastes, such as filter coffee, Masala Chai, Malabar egg puff, and Kosha Mangsho Wrap, the brand seamlessly integrates with India’s rich culinary traditions. This approach fosters connections and provides a distinctive experience for both seasoned coffee lovers and first-time customers.

The Coimbatore store exemplifies this ethos, enriching the community and celebrating local culture while setting a new standard for Starbucks' growth in India.
