Suspended Coffee
2017 Hong Kong. Reserve Store. Design Awards - Winner
This Starbucks Reserve store was located on the ground floor of Pacific Place, a shopping mall by British designer Thomas Heatherwick. The unique characteristics of the site, particularly its high ceilings, inspired the introduction of a captivating suspended design element. Drawing from the Neapolitan bar tradition of the 'suspended coffee,' we envisioned a dynamic, theatrical ceiling that evolves over two-hour cycles, mimicking the way the aroma of coffee gradually fills the air, enhancing the sensory experience.
To complement this innovative feature, we carefully selected a refined palette of materials that balances modernity and warmth. Concrete was chosen for its urban and contemporary appeal, natural stone for its timeless elegance, and wood for its inviting warmth and tactile quality. These materials were thoughtfully combined to create a cohesive and welcoming environment that aligns with the elevated aesthetic of a Reserve store.
Creating a distinctive store while respecting the Starbucks brand's identity and guidelines was a rewarding challenge. By combining innovative elements like the dynamic ceiling with familiar features that evoke the essence of the brand, we crafted a space that feels both unique and true to its core values
